Balkan botanical Garden of Kroussia

Kroussia

In Kroussia, a low and lush mountain range with dense forests of oak and ash the springs of the Gallikos River gush. The highest peak is Mavrovouni at an altitude of 1.179m.

Mount Mavrovouni in Kroussia

Diverse flora and forests of unique beauty is what the visitor will encounter in Mavrovouni, the highest peak of the mountain range of Kroussia, at 1.200 meters.

Mavrovouni begins with a vertical direction from Mount Kerkini (Belles) and proceeding to the southeast, it separates the great plain of Serres from the plains of Kilkis, constituting the natural border between the two prefectures. The cluster of these mountains holds the springs of the river "that carries gifts", Gallikos.

The flora in Mavrovouni varies widely. The area is dominated by deciduous forests of oak, pine and beech. At the same time, the herbaceous vegetation is particularly impressive as well. Myriads of wildflowers pop up, painting the landscape with gorgeous colors. Daffodils, Maldives, echiums, various kinds of campanulas and wild daisies bloom alongside the honeysuckles and geraniums. Mountain tea and chamomile along with cardamom give color to the landscape while the observant traveler will notice even the many grasses, the iris, the wort and sedge, krokos and the wild oregano.

Herbal balms, herbs and grasses grow here undisturbed, since the indiscriminate felling and the overgrazing of the region has now come to an end. A walk on the land will surely leave you with a wonderful collection of colors and scents of the Greek nature.

Mount Paiko

Peaceful, friendly and charming, the Mount Paiko is ideal for mountain hikes and breathtaking naturalistic tours.It’s located on the northwestern part of the prefecture of Kilkis, along the border with the prefecture of Pella and its highest peak is GolaTsuka (1.650m).Its geographical position, combined with the altitude, the morphology and composition of the soil, gave to this area some quite rare characteristics.Through beautiful trails across green slopes, one can reach the picturesque villages of Paikos (for example Griva and Kastaneri) with their small paths, central squares and schools that resemble an older era.

Mega Rema (Kotza - Ntere) or Stream of Mayday is an idyllic location just 3 km from Axioupoli.It is an excellent fishing location and it features taverns, restaurants and accommodation options.In the east, at the location "Turkish fountain", at an altitude of 1450m a shelter is located, from where the top can be reached by an hour of hiking.Karpi is another small settlement on the eastern foothills of Mount Paiko (altitude 380m), which stands out for its Black River (TsernaReka).It came together from four other settlements in the area, which were consolidated in the years of the Ottoman rule.At the border of the country one can find the "gate" of Idomeni, with the beautiful water tower and the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary that is distinguished for its interior decor.The settlement, which is known for the railway border station, was named after the ancient Idomeni, for which there are references in Herodotus and Thucydides.

Waterfall & Mount Belles

The Mount Belles (2.031 m.) is the natural border with FYROM and Bulgaria to the east. The imposing mass of the mountain along with the serene beauty of Lake Doirani compose the amazing scenery. The abundant waters that flow in the region, the lush vegetation of the low mountain with ancient oaks, maples and ash trees enchant the visitor. Hidden amidst this lush vegetation is the waterfall of Belles, which became accessible for hikers with the construction of a paved trail and a forest recreation area. On the outskirts of the mountain, waiting for the visitors, lays the picturesque village Kavalari with the scout camp center. High on the mountain and after 2.000 meters, the vegetation is lost and the realm of the eagles can begin.
